Dear ESMAC Members, Colleagues and Friends,

The COVID-19 situation represents an unprecedented global health crisis that requires special measures. It is becoming increasingly clear that the ongoing pandemic will continue to impact society at large and the possibility for scientists to meet at international meetings such as ESMAC2021 scheduled October 11-16 in Odense, Denmark.

Europe/the world is on the edge of introducing an effective vaccine and we sincerely hope this will pave the way for a traditional ESMAC conference in Odense.

The exchange of newest scientific knowledge is essential for ESMAC. Consequently, if we are not allowed to host a physical conference in Odense, we will provide a virtual solution including a gait course, pre-conference symposiums and a scientific conference.

A final decision on physical or virtual conference will be made by early-May prior to the Abstract submission deadline (see ‘Important deadlines’).

The current web-page includes information for the ‘best-case scenario’, exemplified as a physical conference. However, Abstract-submission deadlines, Pre-conference symposiums and the Scientific programme reflect activities that will be conducted regardless of the status of the pandemic.
We know that there will be a lot of questions arising from this uncertainty on how the conference will be held. However, ESMAC is eager to answer them fully as plans come to fruition. Thus, we will keep you informed on the current web-page and act in accordance with national and international guidelines.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

It is an honor and pleasure to HOPEFULLY welcome you to the ESMAC 2021 Annual Meeting in Odense, Denmark.

Odense is situated on the island of Funen, right in the heart of Denmark, and is the country’s third largest city. The city is one of Denmark’s oldest, granted town rights in the year 988, and was originally named Odins Vé, as a place of worship for the Nordic god Odin. It was once the site of a Viking ring fortress on the banks of the Odense River. Due to this rich history, it has for centuries been a favorite destination for visitors. Today, it is first and foremost known as the hometown of the celebrated author Hans Christian Andersen.

Odense is easy to reach, easy to navigate, and easy to feel at home in. Everything is within comfortable walking distance, creating an intimate infrastructure and feel around your meetings.

In Odense there is a unique and very strong collaboration between the city of Odense, the University of Southern Denmark and Odense University Hospital. This collaboration is a main factor behind the city’s status as one of the centres of knowledge and education in Denmark, particularly in the field of musculoskeletal health, welfare technology, robotics and drones.

We’ll prepare an excellent scientific programme for you. The multidisciplinary international gait course and pre-conference seminars will be held at the Campus of the University of Southern Denmark. We have scheduled interesting seminars, offering you tutorials on novel techniques in human locomotion, advanced models on gait variability and subject specific biomechanics, plus injury prevention in elite athletes.

The three-day conference is hosted at the ODEON conference venue located in the historical city centre of Odense. The conference will consist of high level keynote speakers, and many oral and poster sessions that you are used to at annual ESMAC events.
Just outside the Conference Hall, located in the historical city centre of Odense, there is ample hotel capacity to suit every taste and budget. The city’s layout makes it easy to meet up with other delegates when going out for a meal. Discussions and brief meetings are always just a short step away.

In our cozy city you can run or wander along the river walk in the footsteps of Hans Christian Andersen. You may also rent a bike and have a view on the city from dedicated bike lanes, as this is the most traditional but also most convenient way to move around. What about a morning swim in the outdoor harbor-pool or a visit to a historic castle?

We hope to meet you in Odense!
