Advanced Gait Course: UPDATE

7 – 8 October 2021

Let me share with you some specific details of the ESMAC Advanced Gait Course.

We will start on Thursday morning on Zoom with three talks to “warm you up” (introduction to gait analysis, a case example, and principles of data interpretation). In the afternoon and then on Friday your teachers will present 2 + 4 complete clinical cases of various pathologies (CP hemiplegia, diplegia, poliomyelitis, hereditary spastic paraplegia, adult stroke, young child with brain injury, spina bifida, foot problem approached with a foot model, etc.). Note that some cases are “to be confirmed” but the message is that you will get a varied selection of genuine clinical cases. They typically include history, physical exam, video, angles, moments, powers, EMG, some special tests, sometimes repeated. The assumption is that you are past the basics of gait analysis and looking for training on how to synthesise complex data to help your decision-making processes.

The case discussions will be facilitated by two experienced gait analysts with complementary skillsets (clinical/technical) working with max. 10 students in several parallel Zoom breakout rooms. Student groups will rotate to learn from a range of gait analysts, see the ESMAC teaching faculty, and double that with the invited teachers hand-picked by each regular teacher.

There will be 30-minute coffee breaks (bring your own) and 1h lunch breaks (bring your own) with opportunities to visit exhibitors (to be confirmed) in breakout rooms and for people to catch up in virtual meeting rooms in the breaks. We may have a remote lab tour(s) in the lunch break(s).

Ahead of the course, you will get a handout with the slides, and two interactive apps/programs to help understand joint moments and transverse plane bony deformities of the cases.

Make sure you register soon as the number of places is limited.

See you in October,

Gait Course

7 – 8 October 2021

Note the new date, this is Thursday and Friday on the week before the ESMAC Seminars and Conference. By moving the Gait Course to the previous week, we could remove the hard decisions of what parts of the typically parallel programme you select, now you can have it all!

Advanced Gait Course

I am pleased to confirm that this year we bring back an old tradition by running an Advanced Gait Course as part of ESMAC 2021. We all appreciate that the clinical decision-making process is a challenging and difficult part of gait analysis, and so in 2021 we will put more emphasis on case presentations and interactive discussions. Your learning will be facilitated by experienced teachers and supported by expert gait analysts. Our target audience includes clinicians and gait analysts who understand the basics and need exposure to how gait results can be synthesised to maximise effective management of our patients.

The two-day Advanced Gait Course will be delivered online on Zoom. We will begin with a short and steep refresher on gait analysis, and then continue with lots of cases in a range of clinical conditions. Small groups of students headed by expert panels will discuss each case in parallel sessions in virtual breakout rooms, followed by regrouping and reflection.
